Transcrime awarded Horizon Europe project SignAIL to counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference

The growing scale of online information ecosystems, combined with advances in AI and synthetic media, has increased the reach and sophistication of coordinated influence operations commonly referred to as FIMI (Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference). Malicious efforts conducted by state and non-state actors across diplomatic networks and both online and offline media ecosystems, with the aim of undermining democratic institutions, values and social cohesion.

Against this challenge, Transcrime has been awarded the Horizon Europe project SignAIL (Strategic Intelligence for the Detection and Triage of Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference) – funded by the European Commission – together with six partners, coordinated by UBITECH.

Over two years, SignAIL will deliver an integrated suite of EU-based, AI-powered solutions to detect, assess and respond in real time to FIMI operations, map narratives and actors, and mitigate their impact. It will also strengthen information-sharing among authorities and provide training activities for relevant stakeholders. Transcrime will lead the research on FIMI drivers and schemes, informing the development of the technological solutions and policy recommendations.

The project also builds on methodological approaches developed in previous EU-funded initiatives such as CEASEFIRE and FERMI.
