This Report on security in Trentino has been released three years after the last update on the security in the province.

It does this by using a formula that combines three different plans (the European level, the national level and the local level) in a ten-year time series. It is a strategic choice to understand how criminal phenomena are evolving and how local crime trends are affected and/or repeat trends common to other contexts, both Italian and non-Italian.

In recent years it has often been said that Trentino is no longer an exception and that the security conditions, typical of this area, are deteriorating.
This is a statement that is only partially true if we look at the data. Violent crime, in fact, is decreasing but home thefts, the most alarming crime, are increasing considerably. From 2009 to 2013, home thefts almost tripled.

The causes of this increase are not so much sought in local crime circles but are linked to criminal mobility dynamics at national and European level, that require concerted action by the control agencies of different countries. In all this, faced regarding these transnational phenomena, the question is about what can be the role of local bodies and institutions that have among their objectives to guarantee the safety of their citizens.

The most effective responses to the new emerging problems come from some of the indications that are also being consolidated at an international level. The most important one refers to the necessity of strengthening cooperation between the public and private sectors in prevention actions.
