Next-level Data and Tools for Investigative Journalism

Funded by European Union - Creative Europe (CREA)
Starting date November 2024
End date October 2026

NEXT-IJ (CREA-CROSS-2024-JOURPART) is an EU-funded initiative aimed at providing journalists, newsrooms and media outlets with state-of-the-art tools, data and training. By addressing the complexities of cross-border investigations, the project aims to enhance their ability to expose corruption, organised crime and financial crime in today’s increasingly interconnected digital landscape.

Over the course of two years, the project will link diverse global data sources – providing extensive and novel datasets, including photos, videos and satellite imagery – while integrating advanced analytical tools and training journalists in their practical application. These resources and tools will be tested through high-profile investigations to ensure that the project produces impactful and actionable results.

Transcrime and the School of Journalism of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, will partner with the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) to provide cross-border investigative journalism with a critical technology and skills edge to effectively challenge perpetrators.

As the leader of Work Package 3 (WP3), Transcrime will develop and integrate data sources, tools and a risk-based approach, applying proprietary risk indicators and intelligence analysis. It will also carry out an analysis of potential legal and ethical issues to ensure that activities, tools and datasets comply with both applicable laws and regulations and ethical considerations, and will develop detailed guidelines for journalists (WP4).
