The Journal Impact Factor is one of the most used synthetic indexes for the assessment of scientific production on the international level. It is presented yearly in the Journal Citation Report (JCR), published by Thomson Reuters since 1975. The JCR includes different indexes for the evaluation and comparison of the most relevant scientific publications. Among these, the Impact Factor measures the frequency with which, in a given year, the articles published in a journal during the two preceding years have been cited in other scientific publications.
